The Puppetmaster of Cloning

To any logical person, cloning a pet seems unnecessary and frivolous. When there are so many homeless pets already, and pet cloning cannot guarantee an animal that is identical to the genetic donor in appearance or behavior, it seems ridiculous to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to clone a pet. Many people oppose pet cloning ethically, as well. It is an unnatural practice, and it will eventually lead to human cloning. Despite the enormous opposition to pet cloning, the industry has begun to become a profitable enterprise.

How is it that pet cloning has become such a big consumer industry? To understand how pet cloning has advanced despite opposition, we can look to John Sperling, the man who has had the most impact in the field. The website for the Center for Genetics and Society says, “Sperling has invested millions in companies he established to create cloned and genetically modified animals, and has a major stake in opposing any legislation that would ban these practices. He has shown a willingness to take public and controversial stands, and seems to enjoy a fight.” Sperling created Genetic Savings and Clone and is involved with companies that research human cloning and genetic manipulation. According to the Center for Genetics and Society, “Sperling has committed extensive resources to extending the human life span, up to and including the possibility of immortality.”

Sperling has made large sums of money in his genetic manipulation ventures and elsewhere. He has used this money to influence politics in favor of cloning and to fund companies that research human cloning. Sperling is a major reason pet cloning has grown to a commercial status and remains legal despite opposition. If he continues on his current path, he will influence the eventual cloning of human beings. It is clear that this is his goal, and if his success with pet cloning is any indication, he will attain his goal.
